While we believe the internal scan will always remain a key data point, the advantage of surface scanning is that it is comparatively very inexpensive, non-invasive, and can be used on a recurrent basis with multiple postures. Once the relationship between a patient’s hard and soft tissue is understood, the surface scan can be used regularly with the need for internal scanning before and after treatment.

Pioneering a New 3D Imaging Technique
For the past 10 years, 3dMD has pioneered and matured a revolutionary new technique for highly accurate soft tissue imaging. The technique applies the complex mathematical principles of stereo photogrammetry to capture the patient ultra fast and generate a digital 3D model of the human form. Similar to the migration of internal modalities, 3dMD envisions our 3D surface images replacing traditional 2D photographs, which lack perspective and are thus subjective in nature. As our imaging process is no more intrusive than getting your picture taken with a conventional camera, 3dMD’s surface images can be captured as frequently as desired, enabling the physician to take several images covering different expressions in a single session. Additionally, 3dMD’s imaging speeds are so fast that even the erratic movement by the youngest of patients is not an issue.

Accumulating a Knowledge Base of Application Requirements
To complement our pioneering efforts in the area of 3D surface imaging, 3dMD has worked with and is continuing to work with some of the world’s leading clinical specialists to develop a wide range of applications that address patient condition assessment, treatment planning, and outcome analysis. Initially, this cooperation resulted in the development of 3dMD’s own patient measurement and planning software environments, 3dMDpatient and 3dMDbreast, as well as the establishment of clinical research programs, usage protocols, and further applications addressing a range of conditions and syndromes.
